Welcome to Spite & Malice! Get ready for a fast-paced, strategic card game that’s easy to learn and endlessly fun. Our HTML-based game means you can play instantly on any device – PC, laptop, Android, or iPhone – right from your browser, with absolutely no downloads or installations!

Getting Started with Your Game

  1. Access the Game: Simply open your web browser (like Chrome or Mozilla) and go to our website. Spite & Malice loads instantly, bringing the competitive card action directly to you.
  2. Player Setup: You’ll typically play against an AI opponent, or if a multiplayer option is present, you can connect with another player.
  3. Understand Your Piles:
    • Side Pile (or Goal Pile): This is your main objective. You need to be the first player to empty all cards from your personal side pile.
    • Hand: You’ll draw cards into your hand, typically five at a time.
    • Stock Pile: The main deck from which cards are drawn.
    • Discard Piles: You’ll have several personal discard piles (usually four) where you can temporarily move cards from your hand.
    • Build Piles (or Center Piles): These are shared piles in the center of the table where players build sequences from Ace up to Queen (or King, depending on rules). This is where you play cards from your hand, side pile, or discard piles.

How to Play Spite & Malice

The core gameplay involves strategically playing cards to the central build piles while simultaneously blocking your opponent.

  1. The Goal: Be the first player to move all 20 (or more, depending on setup) cards from your Side Pile onto the central Build Piles.
  2. Playing Cards:
    • From Hand to Build Pile: You can play cards from your hand onto a Build Pile if they follow the ascending sequence (e.g., A, 2, 3…).
    • From Side Pile to Build Pile: The top card of your Side Pile can *only* be played onto a Build Pile. This is crucial for winning.
    • From Discard Pile to Build Pile: The top card of any of your Discard Piles can also be played onto a Build Pile.
  3. Discarding: If you can’t or choose not to make any more valid plays from your hand to the Build Piles, you must discard one card from your hand onto one of your personal Discard Piles. This ends your turn.
  4. Drawing New Cards: At the start of your turn, you’ll draw cards from the Stock Pile until you have five cards in your hand.
  5. Blocking Your Opponent: A key strategy involves playing cards that your opponent needs, especially cards that would block their access to their Side Pile cards or crucial moves. For example, if you play a card to complete a sequence (up to a Queen), that Build Pile is cleared, and a new sequence can be started with an Ace.
  6. Winning the Round: The first player to successfully move all cards from their Side Pile to the central Build Piles wins the round!

Tips for Mastering Spite & Malice

  • Focus on Your Side Pile: Always prioritize playing the top card of your Side Pile. These are your winning cards!
  • Strategize Your Discards: Think ahead when discarding. Don’t block yourself from future moves, and try to keep options open for playing onto the Build Piles.
  • Block Your Opponent: Pay attention to what your opponent needs. If you see a card they might use from their Side Pile or discard pile, try to play the next card in that sequence yourself to block them.
  • Manage Your Discard Piles: Use your multiple discard piles strategically to organize cards and keep desired cards accessible for future plays.
